#Stuffies4Kids

I won our Christmas tree from Capitol Christmas Trees, a business that gives back
by donating to and collecting donations for foster kids.
Renee with her dog, Lola

Our daughter Renee, 7 wrote a letter to Santa last week. I’m such a proud Mom!
We decided to start a fundraiser for local foster kids.

Renee has a big heart! This holiday season she wants to give Stuffed Animals to foster kids (who might not otherwise receive much or anything at Christmas.) Let’s help Pay It Forward!

Did you know thanksgiving or giving (gratitude) can contribute to healthy living?

It’s true! Dr. Robert Emmons, a Professor of Psychology at the University of California says:
Give something away. When we are givers, we reflect more clearly on what it is like to be a receiver. Also, we are grateful for the opportunity to give, knowing that giving brings happiness to self and others.

Please consider making a donation. Any amount helps!

All donations are greatly appreciated!
Thank you for reading our story.

Teddy Ruxpin: Revamped!

If you were a kid in the 80's or 90's this bear was one of the hottest toys around!

Born in 1984, my twin and I each had a Teddy Ruxpin. We even shared a Grubby...
Until he was well, too "grubby" that our Mom decided he needed to go; because, we had tried to feed him too many times!

My parents got the last Santa Suit in town that year!

We were preemies: born via Caesarean Section. 1 lb 13 oz and 1 lb 9 oz. We spent months in ICU before we could be transferred to a hospital closer to home. Failure to thrive... I couldn't even imagine! Renee was so little... and she was 4 lbs 15 oz.

When I was still young (I vaguely remember doing it, too) I put on Teddy Ruxpin's Santa Suit! I was probably 4 or 5 at the time. We dressed my daughter in the same outfit just for the sake of it and she happily obliged at 2 :)

Now, after 30 years.... Teddy Ruxpin is making a comeback!

Wicked Cool Toys announced the new Teddy Ruxpin, shows the improved animatronics of the toy. Gone are the Teddy Ruxpin's moving eyelids, and eyes. They are replaced with tiny round LCD displays showing full-color animations of Teddy blinking and looking around. It adds to the believability of the character. Also less moving parts means- less parts to break.
Teddy Ruxpin’s hands can also be pressed to change stories, making it easier for kids who aren’t quite old enough to use a smartphone or tablet to interact with the new toy. As for Teddy’s old pal Grubby, there’s no word on whether or not he’s getting an upgrade.Coming to stores Fall 2017 the new revamped Teddy Ruxpin.

The New Teddy Ruxpin is set to launch in stores next Fall for a price of $99.99

Surprise From FiveJoy!

Copied email from FiveJoy's Co-Founder

Thanks for Making it Right #FiveJoy!

FiveJoy sent us a package with Not One but Two teepees! One was a replacement teepee for the one that broke and for the Animal Kingdom Teepee as a surprise for my daughter who absolutely adores all animals "for the inconvenience."

Renee and her friend had a ball playing in the FiveJoy Spaceship Teepee!

I'm happy to report the second FiveJoy Spaceship Teepee we were sent was finished and much easier to setup. The holes in the top poles were drilled large enough for the laces to fit through properly, as they should 😊

Pros:
  • Heavy-duty, nicely printed canvas
  • Bag for storage
  • Portable

Tips for Assembly:
  • An extra pair of hands is helpful when putting these teepees together!
    • The time to put a teepee together was an estimated 10 minutes with some help, much better than struggling by ourselves!
  • If the holes aren't drilled large enough for the laces or strings to fit through, you can use a drill, screwdriver or screw- whatever you have on hand to widen the hole.
  • Each teepee comes with instructions and a piece of sandpaper. You may need to sand the poles where they fit together, in order for the poles to fit into the PVC properly.
  • Once you've assembled the poles, put them through the top of the teepee where the opening is (taking care that they are threaded through the seams for the poles.
I believe the first product I was sent was defective. I can now confirm that.

FiveJoy sent my daughter their Animal Kingdom Teepee as a surprise and to make amends.
Customer Service
After receiving no traction about a replacement product through a series of emails with Stephanie the Customer Relationship Manager and finally Jennifer the CEO of FiveJoy. I left reviews and feedback based on my experience. Shortly thereafter I received the above email from Jennifer.

Bottom Line: I would recommend the FiveJoy Teepee based on my experience.

My Recommendation: Based on the products I received there are some flaws with the design, which I spoke with FiveJoy's CEO in detail. If you run into similar issues with other companies, I recommend being persistent and following up.

Disclosure: I received this product as a replacement for the one I previously reviewed. I was not compensated in any other way. All opinions are my own.

Honesty and the Power of Social Media

It's amazing what honesty and the power of social media can do!
I checked my email and read for yourselves the email I received this morning from FiveJoy regarding their product.

Screenshot of email from FiveJoy Co-Founder/CEO, Jennifer

My Response to FiveJoy and their CEO/Co-Founder

Hello Jennifer!

I appreciate your response and hope you follow through this time. My 5 year old daughter and I would be very appreciative! She will be over the moon if and when a new one arrives!

You can blame mistakes on various processes, email and/or whatever else. My point is, no matter where the fault lies, in Business, Retail or E-Commerce the customer or consumer is what matters. By the way, it would be nice if you took the time to spell my name correctly. Thank you!

Kind Regards,
Danielle Papsis

I'll let you all know when I receive the replacement FiveJoy Teepee as Jennifer said in this latest email. I do hope they follow through.

Have you had a similar experience? I want to hear from you! What did you do to remedy the situation? If you are dining at a restaurant will you say something if your order comes and is not as you requested?

#FiveJoy Teepee (Spaceship) Review

My daughter loves making forts out of blankets or beach towels... even sheets. She will drag the chairs from my dining room into our living room in her attempt to make a blanket fort for her and Lola, our Pomeranian. The two are virtually inseparable and when they are, Renee makes sure she knows where Lola is!

After struggling with this product for close to an hour she was so excited!
The FiveJoy teepee comes packaged in a cardboard box and paper. It has it's own bag.

I was disappointed in the FiveJoy Teepee I was sent because it was not easy to set up as quoted. The holes in the top poles were not drilled large enough for the laces to fit through properly. If you shift the teepee around at it comes apart because the poles are in three sections which would be nice if they were tapered and fit snuggly; however, I was constantly fixing the teepee and one leg or another, putting it back together. I had to tie the teepee canvas around interwoven in the poles at the top to try and keep the canvas up as shown in the photo above. Once taken down, and I tried to put the teepee back together the next day the laces literally fell off and had come unstitched.

Pros:
  • Nicely printed canvas
  • Bag for storage
  • Portable
Cons:
  • Poles were unfinished
    • The holes were not drilled all the way through or enough for the product to be setup as pictured on Amazon.
  • The strings or laces came un-stitched from the canvas
Quality and Ease of Assembly
I expected this teepee to be easy to assemble and a high-quality product. I believe I was sent a defective product; however, I cannot confirm that.

See how the string laces through that one hole but not the others?
The pole in the forefront is not drilled all the way through.

Sadly the Strings or Laces literally fell off of the canvas after one use!

Customer Service or Lack Thereof
I tried working through the website I review products for to obtain a replacement product to no avail. I called a phone number I received from Amazon for FiveJoy and left a message on their Google VOIP without a reply. Amazon could not replace the product because there was a promo code involved.

I got my and my daughter's hopes up of being able to receive a replacement product through a series of emails with Stephanie the Customer Relationship Manager and finally Jennifer claiming to be the CEO of FiveJoy.

Bottom Line: Unfortunately, I cannot and will not recommend the FiveJoy Teepee based on my experience.

My Recommendation: I would opt for a less expensive product that is structurally sound. Based on the product I received there are some flaws with the design, quality control problems and/or at the very least lack of customer service. I am very disappointed.

Disclosure: I received this product in order to facilitate my honest and unbiased review. I was not compensated in any other way. All opinions are my own.

Guess the Animal Faces: Animal Identification Book #Review

You can find "Guess the Animal Faces" Here!

Guess the Animal Faces: Animal Identification Book for Kids by Dr. Lisa Rusczyk is one of the You Are Loved Series. The author is a Stay-At-Home Mom to two daughters and holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership.

The book is supposed to be viewed in landscape view. It was a cute, quite lengthy picture book. It is available as an e-book via Kindle or by using a Kindle App. I chose to install the Kindle App on my iPhone and view it that way. I would encourage the use of a tablet, if available or computer to ensure the pictures are large enough.

This playful picture book is geared towards a pre-reading audience. Mom and Dad or whomever can read and play along to help baby or their toddler find and guess the corresponding and appropriate animals.

In the first half of Guess the Animal Faces, cartoon pictures are provided where toddlers are encouraged to guess what the animal is, on the next page there is a realistic photo with a response.
First you see a cartoon animal to which you are supposed to guess what it is.
Then you are provided with a realistic photo with a caption such as "Koala".
To be honest, I'm not sure I would have recognized the cartoon camel. I have seen alpacas and llamas; but, perhaps a toddler would guess this correctly.

Photos from "Guess the Animal Faces" with a photo of a Bactrian Camel.
It's interesting to see how mainstream exotic animals have become, even in children's books. My family and I can relate. My father and stepmother own quite a menagerie. My daughter is the second generation to grow up around a wide variety of animals including a hybrid camel named Caesar (Bactrian and Dromedary cross).

Visiting Caesar the Camel on a winter day.
It's nice to remind parents and teachers to use positive reinforcement as illustrated below. It is used to praise the child for a job well done and to build confidence and self-esteem.

In the second half of the book kids are encouraged to find the animal from a larger compilation of animals from a grid. This aides in hand and eye coordination and gets the child to interact whether it's with an oral response or by pointing out the picture.

I would have liked to have seen all of the animals in the grid represented in the book or left out of the grid. You will see some animals are not mentioned but show up in the grid.

Language and interaction are so important in ages birth to 3 years old! So much growth can happen. It is best to nurture learning in any way you can. Of course parents can discuss with their children much further about the animals in the book, for example: where might this animal live? What do you think they like to eat? My personal favorite has always been "What sound does this animal make?" You can talk about colors. The possibilities are endless.
